Hansford County property tax protests by type are displayed below. In most counties, the number of single family protests exceeds the number of commercial protests. However, the savings from commercial protests are greater than the reductions from single family appeals. Virtually all commercial property owners appeal their property taxes. In 2018, we estimate 50% of commercial owners appealed their property tax assessment while only 15% of home owners appealed.

Home owners pay more than their fair share of property taxes by not appealing. The vast majority of commercial value is appealed statewide, generally with substantial reductions. Only 15% of Texas home owners protest statewide while the commercial owners appeal aggressively annually. Not appealing shifts taxable value from commercial to single family.
